ST AUSTIN, GRASSENDALE
(1856-1895) |
|
The parish of St Austin's
was opened in 1838 and the earliest graves date
from this time. However, the earliest known
burial register starts in 1856. The church has a
graveyard plan which is currently being
digitised. Images of the plan and further
information about the history of the church can
be seen at the parish website

THE CEMETERY |
|
An outstanding feature of the
Catholic Chapel at Aigburth [Grassendale] has been the
cemetery which surrounds it. When this was first
opened there was no Catholic cemetery on the
South side of Liverpool and it was long previous
to the date when exclusively Catholic cemeteries
were provided at Ford and at Yew Tree, or
catholic portions were reserved in the public
cemeteries. Hence the popularity of the cemetery
at Aigburth. Even to-day [1938] it is difficult
to find a more restful and more unspoilt spot,
now hallowed, as it it, by Catholic interments
during a whole hundred years. Priests buried in
the cemetery are Fathers Charles Cook and
Celestine Franconne of St Augustine's,
Liverpool, Father's Sheridan and Callaghan of St
Mary's, the Venerable Father Anderson of St
Peter's, Seel Street, Fathers Dowding, Hall and
O'Brien of Aigburth itself, Father Frederick
Smith, first Rector of Garston, and Father Thos
Roberts his successor. |
|
There are greaves reserved for
Little Sisters of the Poor, Sisters of the
Faithful Companions and of La Sagesse, whilst
over 2,5000 interments of pious Catholic laity
have taken place in this holy ground. |
